TCL named among CES Global Top 20 TV Brands
Las Vegas, the United States - On Jan. 9th 2009, the grand award ceremony for 2008 Leading Consumer Electronics Brands was held at CES Expo in Las Vegas. TCL, Samsung and Sony, among others, were named onto the Global Top 20 TV Brands list.
Numerous well-known Chinese consumer electronics manufacturers participated in the selection process themed Branding for International Brands. After six months of online voting with 3 million votes from consumers and pipeline distributors, and strict selection standard based on authoritative data from the Ministry of Information Industry and agencies like IDC and GFK, experts from globally renowned brands, patent agencies and TWICE Evaluation Group selected the final award winners in a rigorous process lasting 20 days.
This year, Chinese consumer electronics brands, as represented by TCL, constitute an undeniable power in the selection campaign of CES Consumer Electronics Brands. Although Chinese brands failed to get into the top five, TCL Corporation, the number one TV manufacturer in China, holds the best position among all Chinese counterparts at No.6; four Chinese brands, including TCL, are named onto the Global Top 20 TV Brands list. This indicates that Chinese consumer electronics brands are becoming major players around the world. As the biggest winner of all Chinese manufactures with the most awards and highest ranking, TCL won four awards: 2008 Global Top 50 Consumer Electronics Brands, 2008 Global Top 20 TV Brands, 2008 Top 10 Consumer Electronics Brands in China, with its X9 series LCD TV winning 2008 Global Flat Panel TV Innovation Award.
TCL Multimedia CEO YueWing Leong said, “TCL has established a worldwide business infrastructure to achieve synchronized R&D, supply chain and management. As one of the Chinese brands that pioneered in the international market, we have our own core technologies, patents and an experienced international operation team. The awards we won are a full reflection of market recognition and acknowledgement of TCL’s international operation. TCL will continue to build its international brand image.”

At the CES Expo, the most innovative flat display TV presented by the Chinese manufacturer – 3D TV attracted numerous expo-goers. According to TCL Chairman Li Dongsheng, this specific product TCL presented at the expo is the most recently developed 3D TV with promising potential for commercial applications; and the 3D TV without 3D glasses made its international debut at the exhibition. The innovative product attracted extensive attention from the industrial community at the CES Expo. He also disclosed that the product will be showcased and installed at Shenzhen Airport next week. TCL is the first manufacturer to commercialize 3D TV.
Industry sources said another 3D TV product that requires the use of 3D glasses will be launched in the consumer market. It’s expected that Hollywood and China will release more home-oriented 3D movies and video games in 2009.
At the CES Expo, Chinese consumer electronics manufacturers also presented their breakthroughs in high definition DVD technology. Initiated and co-developed by TCL, the China Blue High Definition Disc player (CBHD) standard with various independent core technical patents also made its debut at the CES Expo. Industry insiders pointed out that the importance of presenting CBHD international standards at the CES Expo lies in three areas:
- Promoting the transition of the whole DVD player sector. After the HD-DVD format lost out to Blu-ray Disc format, China needs a new technical standard to compete with BD format to avoid a complete revamp of the huge Chinese DVD sector. The openness of CBHD technology helps Chinese, European and American manufacturers throughout the value chain to achieve mutual benefit;
- Non-competing nature in different market segments of CBHD and BD thanks to the low patent royalty. CBHD players which cost up to 40% less than BD players target a different group of consumers.
- Comparable quality. Indicators of the CBHD player and disc are comparable to that of BD, and are in some cases even better. From this point of view, the price performance ratio of CBHD is superior to that of BD.
Mr. Li Dongsheng disclosed that TCL has the ability to mass produce the CBHD player.
As to the TV market and corporate goals in 2009, Mr. Li Dongsheng believes TCL will further improve its core competitiveness in the international market by increasing its manufacturing and supply chain efficiency, reducing after-sale costs and making breakthroughs in product innovation and development. On the domestic market, TCL’s sales of color TVs increased considerably: it seized 14% of the flat panel TV market and around 17% of the whole color TV market in the fourth quarter of 2008. Although the global consumer electronics industry will face a harsh market environment in 2009, Mr. Li Dongsheng is confident that TCL can achieve growth in both sales and profits.
